Safeguarding young people
How The Berea Initiative keeps young people safe: mentor screening, session conduct, and how to raise a concern.
Our commitment
Every young person who takes part in a Berea programme has the right to be safe, respected and listened to. Safeguarding is a condition of participation for every mentor, volunteer and staff member — not an optional add-on.
Mentor screening
Mentors and volunteers who work directly with under-18s complete an application, provide references and agree in writing to our code of conduct before any match is made.
How sessions run
Sessions with minors are arranged through a guardian or partner institution, take place in agreed settings or on recorded platforms, and are never conducted through private one-to-one channels arranged informally.
Raising a concern
Anyone — a student, guardian, mentor or member of the public — can raise a safeguarding concern through our contact form or by email. Concerns are reviewed by a named staff member and are never shared with the person they concern.
