About

Opportunity should not depend on where you begin

The Berea Initiative expands educational opportunity, mentorship and pathways for young people, with an initial focus on Ethiopia.

Mission

Opportunity should not depend on where you begin. The Berea Initiative works to expand access to education, mentorship and guidance for young people, so that talent and effort — not circumstance — shape what a life can become.

Vision

A generation of young people who are equipped, supported and confident enough to build the futures they choose, and to strengthen the communities they come from.

The name

Why Berea

The name comes from Acts 17:11, where the people of Berea are described as having received new ideas with eagerness and then examined the evidence carefully for themselves. That posture — open, curious, unwilling to accept a claim simply because it is repeated — is the disposition we want to cultivate in the young people we work with.

It is also how we work. We begin by listening, we look for evidence before we act, and we are willing to change our approach when the evidence tells us to.

Values

How we work

Integrity

We do what we said we would do, and we say plainly what we have not yet done.

Curiosity

We ask questions before we offer answers, and we keep asking after we do.

Opportunity

We work to widen the set of paths available to a young person, not to choose the path for them.

Evidence

We look at what is actually happening, and let that guide what we build next.

Service

We exist for the people we work with, not for our own profile.

Dignity

We represent people as capable participants in their own future, never as case studies in need.

Accountability

We report our status honestly, including when a programme is still on paper.

Who we serve

The people this is for

  • Secondary school students deciding what comes next
  • University students who need guidance rather than instruction
  • Recent graduates navigating early careers or further study
  • Young people whose schools have no counselling or applications support
  • Ethiopian students abroad who want to stay connected and give back

Governance

Leadership and oversight

The Berea Initiative is in its founding stage. Board, advisory and staff information will be published here as those roles are filled.
